A historical note. Back in the 1970's I was really into car stereos and installed a lot of systems in my friend's cars. I had an old VW Bug which had a rear cavity behind the rear seat. I installed a Jensen coaxial speaker and powered it using the left and right speaker positive outputs (no negative). This resulted in the speaker outputting the difference audio between the left and right speaker. This idea was invented by David Hafler and is the basis of "matrix audio". It was the original surround sound and is the basis for products like SYN. Hafler Circuit wiki.Brian Eno recommends Halfer Circuit.

I believe the first implementation of the Hafler system was by Dynaco and called Dynaquad. It was available as a standalone device or as a part of another Dynaco product (e.g., the Dynaco SCA80Q integrated amp).
