I just got back from a free Organ Day at the Kimmel Center in Philly. It is a full day of different events around various organ music and things for people to do. I only stayed for the early concert and some of the Lucas Brown Trio. I’m including the program that will give you an idea of the events and a photo from where I was sitting. I usually sit in the orchestra but after listening to the Wanamaker organ a little while back at different levels of the Macy center city store which is 7 stories high where the best sound for the organ was on the third floor, I decided to sit at the center of the second row on the second tier. Definitely a different sound than the orchestra with less of the detail of the individual performers and a more forward balance of the brass vs strings. The sound in general was more “integrated” which worked well with the location of the pipes in the organ, but to me not as satisfying with the rest of the orchestra. Different strokes. As usual, I took the train in with free parking at the station and since I am in the old fart category, free train rides. Philly has a lot going for it. www.philorch.org/performances/special-performances/fred-j.-cooper-memorial-organ-experience/Tom Kimmel organ day 2023.pdf (977.91 KB)
