The simplest answer I can come up with (for now) is......To make us feel good.
Yes, it can be a time machine to take us back to our youth and simpler times and (speaking as a 77-year-old fart).
It can bring up memories of special events or periods of our lives, like "first kiss" or other things.
But what is it really doing when hear that special piece.
When in my workspace at home or in the car driving around and music is playing it usually is just part of the background with all else in the world. Our minds are doing complex calculations in just getting through whatever we are doing. Most of the time the music is just part of the big picture, but when a piece comes on that flips a few switches in our brain; all kinds of stuff come into the foreground that says stop and listen to me and feel.
I really like those moments.
When I stop the machinery to sit down and only listen, I want to find those special moments. Those experiences are precious. Even if its music that I have not heard before. The gestalt part of our brain can create the feelings of happiness or sadness event with new-to-the-ear music. I know what kinds of music that can do this for me, and I choose not to listen (no matter what else others say about that piece) to music that I know will not flip the right set of switches. I choose not to feel bad!
The powers to be say "to each there own" and yes that is true. How many times have you heard "it is all subjective", and I do believe that too, whole heartedly. I do believe that quite a few of us do follow the leader and do not have real feelings either way or do not express them for fear of being tagged an outsider of an idiot.
