So I have heard the claim made that the source quality affects the digital output. I know someone who said he uses is AK SP1000 (sells for $3500) with his Hugo 2, and claims it sounds better than if he uses his computer as the source. I was skeptical, but when I compared my computer to my Samsung 8, both using digital outs, my computer sounded significantly better than the Samsung (albeit without the USB Audioplayer app, which I have not tried yet). Anyone know why? I can sort of see the phone just being lower grade everything, but the SP1000 versus a computer??

Walter Hi Walter, I think when trying to directly compare two audio products you need to do everything to make sure all the variables are accounted for. The first thing to make sure of is that the respective volume of the items being compared are as close to identical as possible. If one is louder than the other, the louder one will always sound better because that is the way are hearing works. To better understand what you are comparing, it would be helpful if you could list all the components in the signal path so we can analyze things a little more closely. For example, source music (Flac or CD and sample rate) -> DAC or preamp -> Amp - > Speaker or Headphone? Also, list any cables, etc that might be relevant?

Thanks for getting back, Chris. Well, in this case I was streaming Tidal Masters. I accounted for the volume. Aside from the source, the rest of the system is a Mytek Brooklyn, Quicksilver K88 amps, and Legacy Aeris speakers. But see USB Audioplayer post.

I have both a PS Audio DirectStream DAC and a Mytek Brooklyn DAC for streaming MQA. I recently upgraded from the PS Audio P10 "power regenerator" to the P15, and immediately noticed an improvement in the bass, sound stage and distinctness of the individual performers, from both DACs. I have heard several times that "bits are bits", but I suspect that the timing of those bits is really critical to the best sound quality from digital.
