The big question is why is vinyl still here. Is it simply a fad among the young? I understand why old fogies like me are still spinning petroleum products, mainly because of the romance of it. It certainly can not because of the sound. I know it's the young people driving the industry. Just go to a Vinyl Day sale and see all the youngsters buying LPs.

It's a retro thing with them. My niece in college not only plays some vinyl but also has a Polaroid type camera. However, almost all of the music she listens to is on her iphone, and almost all of the photos are taken with the iphone. Both the music and photos have a different place in their world than the same for those of us old farts who either create or listen to music or are avid photographers.

Both the music and photos have a different place in their world than the same for those of us old farts who either create or listen to music or are avid photographers. But there's a lot of crossover for us too. I am/was an avid photographer. But I take far more pictures with my phone than I do with any of my cameras. Why? Because I always have my phone with me and I don't always have a camera with me. Same with music. If I hear/read about some music I'm interested in, I am very likely to stream it - whether on my phone, iPad or computer. Because it is much handier. But if my intent is truly to photograph something, rather than take a picture of convenience, I'll use one of my cameras. Similarly, if I really want to listen to some music that I have on a record, and I have the time, I will play it on one of my systems.

Asked my nephew, who asked for a turntable and powered speakers a few years ago why he wanted it and whether he still uses it. Here is the response:
"My friend that I was living with had a turntable and I used it a lot and liked the sound. I also inherited a lot of records that I was using on my roommate's turntable. When I moved out, I wanted a to keep the records and listen on a turntable of my own. I use it pretty often and like the sound better than my other sources, not because it's "better" per se, but it's just different. I also enjoy going to record stores to buy albums and look at the album artwork. It's just more fun than merely downloading a digital album."

They all have a place but for different reasons. Makes it interesting.
