This was brought to my attention 3 years ago by Paul, and I stupidly and blindly dismissed it. "Mainly because it was more difficult and less friendly, that the one I was using at the moment" This protractor and its UniDin Alignment, and the Analog Magik software have changed all that I thought I knew about cartridge alignment. www.arche-headshell.de/alignment-tools/smartractor/www.analogmagik.com/

I think the SmartTracker is a great tool. The AnalogeMajik software takes it to a whole new level. This is expensive stuff, maybe out of the reach of most. We are lucky to have Dr Vinyl in our group. He is “the” experts in cartridge alignment.

I would be interested to compare the alignment results with the custom generated protractor using the Custom arc template generator for phono cartridge alignment (also prints nice strobe disks). This free windows based program will generate a custom protractor for your tonearm that guarantees the lowest distortion tracking based on the Excel spreadsheet created by John Elison at the Vinyl Asylum. This program was created by Conrad Hoffman who has recently consulted with Shiit Audio on their Sol Turntable. I have been using this program for all of my turntable setups the last few years and I am very happy with the results. Schiit actually supplies a printed protractor using this program with their turntable. Nothing to lose here since there is no cost barrier. Since I don't own the "Arche" product, I will leave it to Dr. Vinyl to report on the similarities or differences of these two approaches.

He is “the” experts in cartridge alignment. Have to agree with Paul. I've looked many times at the AnalogMajik but it is really pricey. I have the Dennessen, Dr. Feickert and my old reliable DB Systems protractor. Unless I want an alignment other than Baerwald, I use the DB Systems.

I had a Dennessen and gave it away when I got the SmartTracker and learned how to use it. The SmartTracker is a bit fiddlely to set up, but once you use it a few times, it becomes quick and easy. I also have the old reliable DB and used to double-check every time I align a cartridge with the SmartTracker. The DB showed perfect alignment each time I compared it to the SmartTracker, so I do not use it anymore. Using the DB alone is a pain because since it is a two-point alignment tool you have to go back and forth a few times to get it zeroed in. Using the SmartTracker with the AudioMagic system just takes everything to the highest level. You have to decide going that route is worth the cost. Dr Vinyl is always willing to help anyone who buys a cartridge or TT from him. You will be assured your LP system could not be aligned any better anywhere.
