Just received info on a new device for subwoofer control from Parts Express. The features and price look great. I'll get one for test after I move into the new house. The interesting thing it has is dynamic EQ. You can have enhanced bass but reduce the drive at selected frequencies as the level goes up. It prevents over driving the woofer at high levels and low frequencies while allowing boost at lower levels. It works OK because ear sensitivity to low frequencies increases as the level goes up. Yes, it seems so. I took a quick look through the setup manual and the procedure is similar to that used with Anthem Room Correction (ASC) that comes with some Martin-Logan (and Paradigm) speakers and subs. I wonder how it would compare in terms of performance. If similar, it would be a really cost-effective way to integrate a sub (or 2) into a system. Tom - please keep us posted.

do you think it is a repackaged miniDSP? I don't think so but you never know.

Someone else asked the same question. If you want to retain stereo although localization is difficult below about 80 Hz, you could use two or you can do as follows: DSP response.pdf (41.87 KB)

do you think it is a repackaged miniDSP? I just checked the instruction manual for the 2 channel miniDSP and it did not do dynamic EQ.

This reminds me of the Dayton Audio DSPB-K DSP Kernel Board.
With its on board ADAU 1701 DSP along with the free Analog Devices SigmaStudio software you can pretty easily generate all sorts of useful audio circuits, including a dynamic bass processor which does what Tom describes (higher bass output at lower volumes, lower output at higher volumes, with control over lowpass freq, High Threshold (dB), Time Constant, Low Threshold (dB), Compression Ratio, and Boost)
It also includes all kinds of interesting programs such as an automatic equalization program, something for generating "subharmonic" content which I haven't tried yet but sounds wild, along with all sorts of crossover and filter designs.
Its available from parts express for only $20, although you need a couple of other boards to go along with it to program it make it work. Also, one board offers two inputs but only four outputs, so you might need more than one for a given project.
Nevertheless this item is remarkable for what it can do and how cheap it is!
