I have been working on yet another turntable project.
This time I have assembled a brand new kit from SRM Tech called Azure. This allows one to take an existing Rega turntable and transform it into a "Super Table". The kit consists of two Acrylic layers available in clear or black. All connecting parts are provided except for the parts you transfer from your old Rega table. You need the motor, pcb, bearing, sub platter and tonearm from your old Rega. SRM Tech does caution that they envisioned their kit to be used with 24 volt versions of the Rega turntables. My P2 was the standard 115v version. You can use this as is but SRM Tech warns about exposed high voltage parts. I chose to purchase the Rega supplied 24v motor upgrade kit as well. In for a penny, in for a pound as the saying goes.
The kit costs about $400 shipped to the US from England. I spent another $200 for the Rega 24v motor upgrade kit. Previously, I had already upgraded the bearing ball, sub-platter, and platter using the GrooveTracer parts. I was going to use a Rega/Moth arm that I had recently fixed the termination on but it still had some noise/static problems so I switched to a Jelco SA-370H I also had. The Jelco arm has the same pivot to spindle distance (222mm) as the Rega arm but does require three holes to be drilled in the arm plate for the Jelco arm collar.
Once I set everything up and installed a Soundsmith Otello cartridge, I was very pleased with the look and feel of this turntable.
Sonically, I believe it is competitive with tables up to at least $2,000 - maybe more. Everything is dead quiet and I checked the speed with a strobe disc and it was rock steady at 33 rpm.
If you have an old Rega table gathering dust and you want to take things to a new level, I can very much recommend the SRM Tech Azure kit.
